Why it wins
The fifth-gen Dot finally sounds like a real speaker, and it remains the cheapest competent entry point to voice control — timers, music, smart-home commands, intercom — with the broadest device compatibility in the industry.
Watch out for
It's a cloud device from an ad company — audit the privacy settings once (mic history, hunches) and it behaves. Sound is good for its size; it won't fill a living room for parties.

Why it wins
A smart display that earns its counter space: a genuinely good photo frame, a hands-free kitchen recipe assistant, a whole-home control panel, and — uniquely — sleep tracking with no wearable via Soli radar. The screen turns Google Assistant from a voice into a dashboard.
Watch out for
No camera — great for bedroom privacy, a dealbreaker if you wanted video calls (the Echo Show has one). Free sleep sensing was time-limited and may now require a Fitbit subscription; verify current terms.
Our verdict
The Dot is the better speaker-per-dollar and Alexa still has the deepest device support. The Nest Hub's screen changes the category though — recipes, camera feeds, a dashboard your household can touch. As a first device for a kitchen or living room, the screen wins arguments the speaker can't. As the cheap room-expander once you've picked an ecosystem, the Dot is unbeatable.
